For this week’s #tbt post I’m throwing it way back and the other direction.
In 1981 the first ever record featuring hip hop to reach the top of the charts and stay there was Blondie’s “Rapture”. While there were other successful genre crossover songs at the time, (Aerosmith’s and Run DMC’s “Rock This Way”) Blondie’s sudden jump from what I like to call disco punk to rapping about what I think is aliens led the way for hip hop to go mainstream. She even took the time to name drop Grandmaster Flash and Fab 5 Freddy so people would know this wasn’t a game.
If you’re a hip hop enthusiast this song HAS to be on your play list or you’re just being snobby. Remind yourself what punk girls can do with artistic liberties and press play:
(Also, she starts feelin’ it around 1:55 if you want to skip ahead to the good part.)
