There’s nothing that I love more than the mix between skating culture and hip-hop. Orange County’s Syspence brings the Californian narrative to his new music video “Bring Me Something.” With a half-pipe in the back yard, grainy VHS camera shots, and a melodic beat the song bangs—simple as that. Shot by Seth “Sonfilms” Ondrick, the video is the perfect accompaniment to Syspence’s unique voice and classic flow.
While listening to the cut, one thing kept ringing in my mind. It was the connection to the classic West Side sound and a new found finesse through Syspence’s cadence. Singing about an unknown lover, the song sets up an old summer day scene in today’s cold weather.
With quick cuts of skating vert and arcade games in the back the video is reminiscent of what would be a scene in “Mid90s,” directed by Jonah Park. The eclectic SoCal skater vibe is a classic and memorable space in time. Whenever an artist can capture their culture and history in a song and video it’s truly a special scene. However, this isn’t Syspence’s first success in my book.
Syspence has been releasing music since 2017 with ten single releases. As he continues to master his craft we can only expect to be treated to more bar-infused cuts.
Blunt in hand, Syspence releases his flow over a beat filled with chimes, 808s and hi-hats. Comfortable and confident, the young MC makes it look easy. His delivery seems effortless as he unravels an intriguing story accompanied by intrinsic visuals. Every aspect of this release speaks to the longevity and influence of the Southern Californian lifestyle.
