For our fifth episode of our Local Talk Fridays, I knew we had to go big! This week, we had the pleasure of talking with Helen Eugene from Super Square. They are one of Seattle’s top trios and they have a new single dropping on April 30th.
Super Square is one of the most beloved names in our city. They’ve entered the hearts of club-goers and car-poolers alike. Countless clubs in Seattle have enjoyed their presence while C89.5 has played fresh cuts on a regular basis. I became a fan myself when I heard “This Atmosphere” for the first time on air in 2014.
This trio has a special connection that you simply don’t see in dance music today. As a fan of trance myself, I admittedly don’t listen to these styles of music, but it’s always a fun departure. I was completely blown away when they opened for Dirty South in 2016.
RMR: Let’s talk about your new track. What inspired you guys to create it?
Helen: It just came out of a random freestyle A_rival (Luke Alex) dropped in on the way home from a gig one night. He was originally on the vocals and then he wanted me to give it a try and the rest is history!
RMR: Super Square is one of the most prolific names in Seattle. Did you guys think you’d come this far, and is there any ceiling in sight?
Helen: Well, we still have a long way to go. We’re really proud of the progress we’ve made and there is no end in sight!
RMR: How did you all come together as a trio?
Helen: That’s a very long story. Short version: A mutual childhood friend of Jimmy and Alex named Ben Lavee asked them to form a group. Ben was a resident DJ for Monster and the Tao group but wanted to get into production.
The three of them started Super Square. I was brought on as a featured singer for the very first official release. Fast forward a few months and Ben was tragically killed in a car accident.
The three of us, after a lot of soul-searching, decided to move forward and pour our hearts into Super Square. We hope that we’re making him proud.
RMR: What has been the biggest moment of your career so far?
Helen: Stepping onto the stage at Key Arena in front of all those people at Bumbershoot. We’ll never forget it.
RMR: When it comes to dream collaborations, who tops your list?
Helen: Trent Reznor. I mean, there are many more to add to that list, but man he is just a legend.
RMR: I first heard your music on C89.5 when “This Atmosphere” first dropped in 2014. What has been your favorite production so far, and what track gets the best reaction from the crowd?
Helen: “Let’s Go” is the winner for sure. That song came together so smoothly. Plus it’s super fun to sing! We get the best crowd reaction from “Bangy Bangy” and now Street Fighter. We’ve previewed it a few times and it GOES OFF!
RMR: It seems like you’ve played all over town. Are there any venues that have locked you down for a residency?
Helen: We have two Seattle monthly residencies: Bass Therapy at Stage and Electric Nights at Studio 7. We’ve played Foundation many times as well as Trinity too. We really get around!
RMR: What events should we look forward to in the future?
Helen: We’ve got our first Spokane gig on the 28th plus PDX next month! Next up, we’ve got a collab with KJ Sawka, and we just finished filming the music video for it too! That one is going to be giant.
You can catch Super Square’s new single Street Fighter on April 30th!
