Seattle’s hip-hop community is home to so many multi-faceted talents, it can be hard to keep up with everything filthy. Spekulation is a producer, arranger, viral internet sensation, blogger, video editor, and all-around artist. Today we’re showcasing just a few of those talents with his new instrumental visual album, (that’s a lot of descriptive words), The Crossover Event.
He first caught our team’s ears with the Doc Watson instrumental album in 2013. Then he shortly caught the world’s attention, when his Marshawn Lynch ‘Won’t Get Fined’ remix went viral. What really captivates me about Spekulation’s talent is his ability to intertwine live instruments and samples to craft a very musical, classic hip-hop sound. Not a lot of producers are able to bring these sonic worlds together in the same way he does.
The Cross Over Event was actually crafted 100% in separate home studios. Not a single artist worked in the same room together. Spek made a call on his Facebook page to find artists willing to contribute to the project while he was struggling to find creative time with a new baby at home.
Time and money were incredibly limited but Spekulation accomplished what hip-hop heads have done for generations before him, crafted new music out of other music. He told me that not a single audio file was used exactly how it was recorded. Everything was chopped, processed, and arranged in a new way to create the cohesive project you see before you.
