South of Midnight is the newest “hallucinatory tale” from Canadian video-game developer Compulsion Games, an Xbox Games Studio. This third-person action adventure game follows Hazel on her journey to discover her magical history and rescue her mom from sinister forces. The game is based in the deep American South, and many of the story’s fantastical elements pulls from authentic folklore.
From the visual style, storytelling, and incredible score, the game takes players into the amazingly rich history of the south while battling incredible and spooky entities known as ‘Haints.’
This game was love at first sight, and after my first 30 minutes, the game’s immersion is palpable very quickly. The soundtrack is a jazz, soul, and blues infusion that grabbed me.
