Scky Rei announces new single “No Friends” on his Instagram page, ending his two-year absence from hip-hop music. His prior work, the 2018 soundtrack Housetop Bounce for Out of Omaha, a film produced by J. Cole, set him up as a hip-hop scene leader in his hometown of Omaha. However, the following years brought him significant life changes.
“No Friends” by Scky Rei
Scky Rei shared with Respect My Region that he has been suffering from depression and anxiety in the last few years. Since the release of Out of Omaha by Dreamville, the artist saw emotional highs and lows: the birth of his first child, the move with his family from Omaha to St. Louis, and more. Periods of high energy mixed with bouts of severe depression, giving rise to panic, irritability, sleep loss, and paranoia. These states are well-defined in his 2019 music, as well as in “No Friends.”
Scky Rei explained that “No Friends” was ready to share with the world in 2019, so he simply decided to upload the single to all music platforms. However, at that time, he wasn’t yet prepared to officially announce the release. “I just did it for the art of my new sound,” he said.
Out of Omaha
These turbulent years taught Scky Rei that only his closest friends, whom he calls his “family,” are real friends. Twin brothers Darcell and Darrell Trotter, featured in Out of Omaha, form the backbone of his family. They have maintained contact with the artist throughout his darkest days. Both brothers reside in Omaha and are “doing great, raising their families, and making money.” Darcell recently dropped his new track entitled “North Tales,” which is available on YouTube.
“Made It”
Before becoming an independent artist, Scky Rei was an MC partnering with producer INFNTLP for BXTH, an alternative hip-hop duo, formerly spelled BOTH. After composing the soundtrack to J. Cole’s film in 2018, and opening a show for Flo Rida in 2016, his most noteworthy was perhaps his designation as “Best Hip-Hop Artist of the Year” in 2019 at the OEAAs. Currently, the artist is working on new projects; soon, he is dropping his collaboration single with DNA Picasso symbolically called “Made It.”
Despite his ups and downs, Scky Rei has shown that he is a force to be reckoned with and a creative hip-hop genius. Check out his single “No Friends” and connect with the artist on socials.
