Saweetie has been in the headlines after recently releasing her EP The Single Life due to her first week sales totaling up to less than 2,000 copies. Prominent industry figures such as Sonny Digital and VladTV recently commented on her project. The former, recently tweeted about how the math between her social media following and first week sales performance don’t add up.
Despite the harsh analysis from her peers, Saweetie’s fans are actually in support of her new release, sending their love. Although the numbers don’t yet validate the support shown online, loyal members of “ICY GANG” continue to pour on support for the Bay Area artist. One of her fans, felt inclined to speak up for her, tweeting about how much she loved the EP.
Another one of her supporters cited receiving positive vibrations on the project, stating Saweetie feels like the friend she always wanted. Even with the industry jumping to criticize the project, it seems as if her fans are continuing to stand beside the artist with ongoing support. Hopefully, this will translate into increased sales in the ongoing future.
A couple of factors could be behind the low record sales. Historically, empowered women who speak out about their femininity often have an uphill battle to success. Given that one of the songs is titled, “P.U.S.S.Y. (Powerful, Utopia, Supreme, Sacred, Yummy),” it’s not surprising to see a polarized reception. Saweetie is a confident woman and that can be intimidating. Secondly, streaming is still king. Her music is being heard but not bought. This is a major issue in the industry at the moment. If you like an artist, buy their music outright. Check out Saweetie’s new EP, The Single Life below.
