Atlanta based rapper Russ has returned by dropping another new track titled “September 16th”, which he’s entirely self-produced. This release is apart of a collection of songs he’s been dropping over the past several weeks. Fans of Russ know that he’s one of the most prolific rappers in the game in relation to releasing new music, and he’s clearly back on his grind this summer.
His new song “September 16th” is interesting in a variety of ways, but most notably with the lyrical content heard. When dropping the song, Russ expressed that it’s a very deep and meaningful piece of work for him. Rightfully so, because the main topic heard throughout is based on Russ’s thoughts towards his father, following his death.
While he expresses many different thoughts from start to finish, the main theme of “September 16th” is love paired with pain and regret. He addresses his father’s expectations of him growing up, and continues these thoughts by rapping about how rap checks have gotten slim since he passed.
What’s also interesting is how emotional Russ is throughout the song, as his personal pain and struggle easily ooze through the mic. While most hip-hop artists build their image to have “untouchable” and “unbreakable” qualities, it’s refreshing to hear the facet of raw emotion and brutal truth heard in a song.
Hopefully the hip-hop community will feel what Russ in feeling, in terms of it being acceptable to convey particular emotions and struggles. More importantly, the song is destined to help many people’s lives as it’s both helpful and relatable.
