Earlier this year our intern Felicia caught up with Redman at Cannacon in Seattle. An icon in both industries, Redman has made his mark as one of the most influential hip-hop artists and a true cannabis celebrity.
Weed has always been a mainstay of the Redman ‘brand.’ How High is a classic stoner flick. Not to be thought of as a “weed guy” Redman has released lyrically classic bodies of work. His solo work on Def Jam is legendary. Red’s collab album with Method Man, Blackout, was also one of my favorite albums growing up.
Thanks to the good people at Cannacon, RMR was plugged with a brief interview. Redman let it be known that his favorite state for marijuana is California. While the Golden state has held it down as the cannabis capital, he did mention Washington’s recreational market has opened up the opportunity for a variety of products and business.
“They have so many forms, strains, and bigger businesses up here… Seattle was only known for good purple back in the day. Now they have so many flavors, the platform of marijuana, recreational and medicinal, is just spreading.” – Redman
We also had to ask what rappers from the current generation Red was listening too. He responded with…
“New artist I listen to is Kendrick, J.Cole, Gunplay from MMG. Chance The Rapper, Baby Dram that me and my daughters favorite. Joey Bad A$$, A$AP Mob a lot of those guys that respect the culture and respect the culture before them. These guys definitely do. Drake is my oldest son’s favorite. Drake is a spitter, I like Drake. But I’m strictly in my era. 90’s and before.”
We then asked about the way Red prefers to smoke.
“In a blunt. When I smoke I have to smoke in a Backwood Sweet. It’s an east coast thing.”
Felica also told the rapper that we smoke backwoods in the Northwest too. He clapped back with..
“but y’all was some Swisher Sweet Smoking mo’ fuckas up here. Y’all was Swisher Sweeting ya asses up here then you finally got on the backwood…and backwoods cost a grip up here.”
He also said Redman and Method Man are working on How High Part 2, and Muddy Waters 2 is coming out this year. Listen to the entire interview below.
