It was a warm Indian summer night on September 27th. Our team took September’s cover of Northwest Leaf magazine and were bringing it to life in a groundbreaking event.
Off of N 36th St, sits the Nectar Lounge, a warm and inviting venue that played host to Seattle’s Most Stoned Emcees. The cannabis industry loves to listen to hip-hop, and the hip-hop industry loves to smoke cannabis. It was a match made in heaven.
We realized the vibe for the night was going to be something more than just a typical concert. A lot of times cliques will form in the crowd and intermingling is rare.
These two worlds however happily embraced one another. It seemed that through the comfort of cannabis, nobody was too shy to introduce themselves. The entire block was taken over by hazy clouds of people. When doors opened the line went around the corner and steadily trickled in for over an hour.
Some people showed up just to socialize outside the venue and didn’t even go inside. I’m also pretty positive that we bought out all of the Swisher’s available on that street.
Seattle’s Most Stoned Emcees
Every performer brought a high energy that fed off of the lit crowd. WebbWavvy took the stage first, setting the tone for the other live performances with some of the Wavvy-ist dance moves and facial expressions. It’s clear that Webb likes to have fun on stage, and he wants you to have fun too.
Yodi Mac had some friends on stage with him as well, also bringing a drummer to the party.
I love it when rappers mix live instrumentation into the performance. It brings an overwhelming energy and a unique sound that you only get when you see someone perform live.
If you’ve never heard or seen Kung Foo Grip before, you need to Google that shit like yesterday. Their performance is nothing short of spectacular. Between Eff is H’s killer freestyles, and G. Cyph’s impulsive movements, you never know what you’re going to get.
Gifted Gab closed the night with a filthy set per usual, even stepping into the crowd to rock a couple verses. Gab brought her Moor gang family out doing a couple joints with Jarv Dee. Gab showed no shame in taking advantage of the major networking opportunity, admitting that she brought resumes with her.
If you slept on this event because you had to work the next day, or you had already seen some of these cats perform before, you’re lowkey dumb.
Respect My Region is bringing in a new era to Seattle’s hip-hop scene. We’re bringing these sea-level performances to a higher altitude. An expansion into different realms that incorporates more communities.
A huge thank you to all of our sponsors for supporting us by being a part of this event. It would mean nothing though if it weren’t for everybody who came through. Each and every person who walked in that door played a role in making the night a success.
