Punk Prism | First Week of Diving into Diverse Punk Sounds

Hello and Happy New Year to the RMR fam! Ready to dive into the vibrant world of rebellious sounds? In this new weekly exploration, we’re shedding light on the latest and greatest punk artists making waves. From raw, DIY garage punk to genre-blending innovators, Respect My Region is here to introduce you to the freshest faces in the scene.

Buckle up, because these artists are rewriting the punk narrative and injecting a burst of new energy into the ever-evolving genre. Turn your volume up and get ready to discover and respect the evolution of punk.

Upchuck “Boss Up”

First up in this week’s roundup are the Atlanta-based Upchuck. Having recently toured with The Paranoyds and Amyl and the Sniffers, they are well on their way to the publicity and recognition they deserve. The group possesses no formal marketing team and limited social media presence. Their music speaks for itself and needs no introduction. Get ready for electric rock and blues influences on a sludgy, hardcore new sound.

Detroit Cobras “Easier to Cry” (Shangri-Las Cover)

Next on the list are a spunky garage-rock cover band from Detroit, Michigan. The Detroit Cobras bring a sultry R&B flair to the Shangri-Las’ 60’s pop original. Vocalist Rachel Nagy embodies a powerful and androgynous rock rasp, yet their sound still maintains a delicate balance of sweetness and poise.

Margaritas Podridas “Pétalos Mordidos”

Subsequently, forged in the Hermosillo underground scene, Margaritas Podridas are a post-punk and shoegaze-inspired quartet. They are actively advancing Mexican fusion music and putting the spotlight on Mexico’s thriving underground scene. Ambient, reverberated vocals atop billowy and bold guitar lines create the perfect dreamy score for all your late-night drives.

ZOMBIE-CHANG “WE SHOULD KISS”

Further, meet Meirin Yung, known by her stage name Zombie-Chang. She is a Japanese soloist who masterfully employs post-punk, lofi and electronic elements from international varieties. In less of a fusion and more of a glorious union of genres, “WE SHOULD KISS” establishes her prowess in both vocals and creative production.

Cherry Cheeks “Pure Power”

Lastly, upbeat, spunky, yet packed with punch, meet Cherry Cheeks. Self-described as an experimental synth-punk project, the Portland-based band is already turning heads with their unique sounds. Keep your finger on the pulse of Cherry Cheeks as they continue to infuse their rebellious, yet artistic spirit into the world of punk.

We hope you’ve enjoyed the ride of exploring fresh new punk sounds. These artists are rewriting the narrative and infusing a burst of new energy into the ever-evolving genre. So, keep your volume turned up, stay tuned for more sonic adventures, and we’ll be back next week with more unique voices to discover!
