I had a chance to scope a fresh new track titled “Rookie of the Year” by Portland’s own Dugg Mason. Straight away this classic soul sample comes pumping in and the beat drops like a bag of bricks. Dugg Mason’s self-produced banger has all the right makings for a memorable summer anthem—chopped up soul sample, crisp bouncy drums, horns (courtesy of Portland jazz trumpeter Noah Simpson,) and well-delivered, easygoing verses.
Dugg Mason’s got the kinda juice PNW hip-hop heads love to sip on. The fact that he can self-produce such a clean track and deliver enjoyable bars stands out to me. In a way that I’ve been searching everywhere trying to figure out more about this guy and if he has an album I can sift through. From what I found on his Facebook and IG, Mason will be moving to Chicago on June 9th of this year. He also boasts new music dropped on the first of every month so mark your calendars! With the ’93 kid on the move to Chi-town, it’s safe to assume he’s making moves in the shadows, low-key thriving more than he lets on. It seems from what I have observed Mason is slept on by the local scene so the move to another, bigger city is never a bad plan. Personally, this dude’s production and verses are too damn clean for my interest not to be piqued. Keeping eyes on him seems like a smart move if he can wet my picky pallet.
If you want an ample serving of summer vibes blasted in your face with low frequencies to make your sister quiver, scope Dugg Mason’s “Rookie of the Year,” below.
Smoker’s Choice: Cuts like the one above pair very well with a nice, euphoric sativa and a sunny summer day.
