Bad news for Canadian festival goers. Pemberton Music Festival is no longer.
Official Statement from Pemberton Music Festival LLC
An official statement from the management of the festival says that “The 2017 Pemberton Music Festival scheduled for July 13 – 16, 2017 is cancelled and will not proceed as scheduled.”
Allegedly, one of the main causes of the owner’s decision to cancel the festival was because of the declining value of the Canadian dollar, as reported by Vancouver radio station CKNW. There are a few possibilities as to why the value of the country’s currency is weakening, but many sources point to mainstream politics (specifically towards the United States) and the rising cost of crude oil. Pemberton was scheduled to feature major artists, such as Muse, Chance the Rapper, A Tribe Called Quest, Big Sean, Major Lazer, and more.
On top of all of this, many of those who have already purchased tickets will not get refunded. At least not immediately. The owners said that “Refunds may be available to ticketholders from third parties if tickets were purchased using a credit card.” So there is at least some hope for those who bought tickets using a third party source AND a credit card.
Jack U (Skrillex & Diplo) at Pemberton in 2015
It’s sad to see such a great festival go out so suddenly. In 2015, Jack U’s “Full Flex Express” made a stop at Pemby to dish out some quality sound. 2014 was graced with the presence of deadmau5, Nine Inch Nails, and Soundgarden.
