Chicago rapper Noname has revealed that her long-awaited sophomore album will finally drop this summer. As per an Instagram post made by her yesterday, the package is set to arrive this July and will be titled Sundial.
After releasing her debut mixtape, Telefone, in 2016, Noname dropped her first studio record two years later. Since the release of Studio 25, she has released several isolated tracks and collaborations, but fans have been deprived of a full-length tracklist. This has been particularly frustrating because she announced that her follow-up album would become available in 2020 in a since-deleted tweet: “I don’t really talk about my music much on here but I’m dropping an album 2020 if anybody’s interested.”
The album was never released, but Noname did launch an online book club in 2019. The following year, she got caught up in expanding it and also became heavily involved with sociopolitical activism. After dropping a handful of singles, joining forces with Saba and Smino to form Ghetto Stage and a brief scuffle with J. Cole, it seems Noname is finally ready to deliver on her promise.
2021 was the last time the 31-year-old MC put out music. Produced by the Kount with vocal contributions from Adam Ness, “Rainforest” was initially meant for Noname’s upcoming album, Factory Baby. Since the project never saw the light of day, it is unclear whether or not said track will make it on Sundial.
Noname will perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California over the next two weekends. Let’s keep our fingers crossed everything goes as planned and the new album drops as per the above post.
