New Music Friday – March 10, 2023
Just For Clarity 2 (EP) – Blxst
Blxst has been very particular about how much he puts out into the world. With only one studio album to his name, the Los Angeles rapper and singer has established himself firmly already. He has now released his third EP — the sequel to 2021’s Just for Clarity is a solid four-piece with features from Mustard, Terrace Martin, Roddy Ricch and Larry June. This should be high up on your list this New Music Friday.
Pain Provided Profit – Conway the Machine & Jae Skeese
Fans of Conway the Machine have it great. Image your favorite artist consistently releasing music and always maintaining the highest standard while doing so … for most of us, that’s just a fantasy. For Conway’s audience, however, listening to new content is just a habit now. On his latest album, he joins forces with fellow Buffalo rapper Jae Skeese and delivers another classic. We’re blessed to keep getting more and more because it just never gets old!
Endless Summer Vacation – Miley Cyrus
American singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus has come a long way since her days on the Disney Channel. At 30, she has dropped her eighth studio album and it is perhaps one of her most personal bodies of work yet. The tracklist is divided into two parts: daytime and nighttime.
“The a.m., to me, is representing the morning time, where there’s like a buzz, an energy, and there’s a potential of new possibilities. It’s a new day,” Cyrus said. “In the nighttime, it feels that there’s a slinky, seediness, and kind of a grime, but a glamour at the same time. In the evening, it’s a great time for rest, it’s a time to recover — or it’s a time to go out and experience kind of a wild side.”
Victims & Villains – Hit-Boy & Musiq Soulchild
Hit-Boy is a master collaborator — anything he touches turns to gold. Now pair him up with one of the silkiest voices in the R&B space and you have a treasure trove. The A-list producer’s collaboration album with top-tier vocalist Musiq Soulchild is smooth and crisp, but we don’t want to give too much away. It just had to be on our New Music Friday list this week, but you’re going to have to find out for yourself just how dope it is.
Hot Shot: Gangsta Grillz – G Perico & DJ Drama
There’s nothing quite like veterans joining forces with the future of their craft. Whereas fans of hip-hop know DJ Drama is an undisputed legend, G Perico is still in the process of spreading his word. Whereas the rapper has been around for a while, he is the next big thing to come out of California. This collaboration is sure to give Perico a much-needed boost and open up Drama’s audience to his work.
“Fire & Ice” – Kool Keith & Real Bad Man (feat. Atmosphere & Ice-T)
Landing a feature from Atmosphere and Ice-T on the same joint sounds too good to be true, but if there’s one thing hip-hop culture has taught us, it’s that no crossover is beyond reach. Having both veterans on a track with Kool Keith and Real Bad Man is the ultimate power move and it far exceeds its already high expectations. This right here is a sonic gem and without question a top pick this New Music Friday.
“Bad Man Lighter 2.0” – Seun Kuti, Black Thought, Vic Mensa
Any student of the game will let you know that Black Thought is arguably one of the greatest MCs of all time. On his latest song, the Philadelphia rapper teams up with Chicago spitter Vic Mensa and leader of Egypt 80, Seun Kuti. Every bar and every beat falls into place so beautifully that it just sounds like it was meant to be.
“Run, Run, Run” – McKinley Dixon
Virginia rapper and singer McKinley Dixon is our secret ingredient this New Music Friday. There’s a flavor to his sound that is … unmistakably him. That is precisely why it’s always a treat when he drops a track because no one else does it quite like him. “Run, Run, Run” is extracted from Dixon’s upcoming album Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?, due on June 2. Keep an eye out!
