Top 7 New Jersey Alternative Music Artists You Should Be Listening To

New Jersey has its own artist in every genre. From jazz to hip-hop, there are always artists breaking out into the scene. The Garden State is a hotbed for alternative artists, as evidenced by bands like My Chemical Romance and The Gaslight Anthem making their mark in pop culture. The state’s music scene goes beyond these mainstream bands, with many alternative bands offering something for everyone. Today’s RMR list features 7 New Jersey alternative music artists that we feel you should be listening to.

New Jersey Alternative Music Artists You Should Be Listening To

The Martyr

It’s no secret that this East Rutherford band packs a lot of punch. The Martyrs’ metalcore-infused classic rock songs are perfectly complemented by Gianna D’Amato’s powerful vocals throughout every album. There is no place they can’t rock the house down and get you jumping, whether they’re playing a basement show or a stage show.

The Schwam

As if to prove that Ska will always be in style, The Schwam have tons of fun with their music. A Paramus-based band started in 2014 and is here to have a good time. After nine years of silence, they released their second album this summer called Raised Highways. Despite the years between their album releases, the band is active in the local music scene, constantly working on expanding their sound.

Painted Young

With a sound that reminds me of late 2000s pop punk bands, Painted Young delivers a nostalgic blast from the past. Those who remember those hot summer days at PNC for the long-gone Vans Warped Tour will be reminded of those fond memories. The songs by Painted Young are filled with infectious energy thanks to the vocals and guitar of Chris Santos.

Eels of Love

It doesn’t take lyrics for this prog rock band from Fort Lee to entice you into their psychedelic sound. With guitarist Christopher Matter, bassist Paul Pollio, and drummer Brandon Essig, the band creates music that transports you to a kaleidoscopic landscape. This band’s music has an undeniable chill, perfect for late-night smoking sessions.

The Victory Drive

It’s fitting that this Powerpop rock band originates from Belmar since their sound feels straight out of an early 2000s summer movie. A summer fun coming-of-age movie is brought to life through the music of The Victory Drives from start to finish. With lyrics that focus on growing up, trials, and tribulations, their music is the perfect soundtrack to your own story.

Starberries

‘Loud, nosy, and emotional’ is how this indie band describes themselves from West New York. Starberries are raw, and reel with their sound and lyrics, and their unapologetically raw approach makes them stand out against the newer, more polished indie bands that stray from the genre’s roots. Featuring distorted guitars, thundering drums, and echoed vocals, Starberries reminds us that music is best when it is unapologetically authentic.

A Boy Named John

The Parsippany-based band’s sound is similar to pop-rock bands of the 2010s. However, they don’t have a band member named John. The six-person band takes the sound of the bands of their youth and makes it their own. Despite the fact that music trends come and go, A Boy Named John proves that some sounds will be timeless for a long time to come.

These musicians bring a unique blend of creativity, authenticity, and innovation to the alternative music scene. The Garden State has a vibrant and ever-evolving music culture. As we continue to explore the rich tapestry of alternative music in New Jersey, it’s evident that this state’s musical legacy is far from fading; instead, it’s thriving and expanding into new frontiers.
