Portland’s Mic Capes immediately caught my attention as soon as I heard his Razor Tongue release last year. An updated version of golden age hip-hop, Capes has a talent for rapping about real shit, in a really dope way. His visual game has been stepped up with the ‘No More’ music video.
Wordplay and substance over dusty samples is nothing new to Capes. On the ‘N0 More’ music video, he takes a trip around PDX and discusses his upbringing as a youngin’ from North Portland and shares his desire to turn the tables and provide for his parents.
Mic Capes – ‘No More’ Music Video
Earlier this year I told my homie Martin Van Londen that I personally listen to more PDX hip-hop than Seattle (not that I want to start a debate now). The city of Rose’s hip-hop scene is even more slept on than the Town’s and I would be very interested in seeing the two unify a little to push to the whole region to the next level.
Between Vinnie Dewayne, Tre Redeau, Cassow, Tope, Myke Bogan, and many more young talents including Mic Capes, the city of roses has an immense amount of talent that is deserving of the national spotlight.
