Meek Mill, who dropped his latest album earlier this month, is no stranger to public beefs. Whether it be with Drake or some kids selling water outside of his car window, the Philadelphia rapper is often a topic of discussion. On Monday, he had more to air out as he hit Twitter to let out frustrations with his labels to his 10.9 million followers.
Currently, he is signed to Atlantic Records and Maybach Music Group while also being under management with Roc Nation. He did not make it clear who exactly his frustrations are with.
Meek Mill Label Troubles
The initial tweet which read, “I haven’t [got] paid from music and I don’t know how much money labels make off me!!!!! I need lawyers asap!!!,” has since been deleted, but was enough to start a wildfire of reactions. Meek Mill added fuel to the flames in a series of tweets that included him threatening to release the details of his deal in the next few days.
The Game Explained
Meek is caught up in one of the ugly truths in hip-hop and record labels. Like DJ Khaled always says, “they don’t want you to win,” and the game is truly geared that way. Hip-hop legend and Drink Champs host N.O.R.E. explained this and his first-hand experiences on the I Am Athlete podcast.
“When you sign to a major label, that money that they give you, let’s say they give you $800,000, alright? That’s a loan. You have to pay back that loan with interest. So, if you don’t make back that $800,000, what they do is, they put you in the red. You can still be hot and you didn’t make back that $800,000. So, they’ll give you another album, and instead of $800,000, they’ll give you $1.2 [million] this time.”
It’s an endless cycle that can leave the labels swimming in the riches while the artist drowns in debt. Meek seems well aware of this and shows no signs of backing down in a final tweet.
What do you think of the situation? Are you rooting for Meek Mill to get back his bag or is he slipping on the business side? I’m sure he’s a guy that has a lot going on but like Marshawn ‘Beast Mode’ Lynch once said: “take care of yo’ chicken.”
