Meek Mill has released a brand new song titled “Otherside of America.” As the title suggests, he addresses and speaks out about the injustices being committed against Black individuals from the corrupt police institutions in the United States. In a time where this country needs Black artists utilizing their platforms to speak out, it’s gratifying to see Meek Mill unwavering in his commitment and support for the Black Lives Matter movement to end police brutality and racial injustice in America.
The death of George Floyd has caused racial tensions to escalate to a boiling point. For several years, Meek Mill has been especially active in supporting criminal justice reform along with Jay-Z. He was previously sentenced for 2-4 years in prison back in 2017, due to a probation violation from two misdemeanors. The situation showed how corrupt and broken the system truly is.
At the beginning of the song, he shares a recording from Donald Trump saying the following: “You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs. 58% of your youth is unemployed. What the hell do you have to lose?”
This very quote sets the tone for his messaging and lyrics throughout. There is no doubt that “Otherside of America” is bound to resonate with so many individuals. Rapping over a sizzling beat, his message cannot be ignored.
