It’s been a minute since we’ve heard new music from Mac Miller, and he’s made it clear that new music is on the way this summer with the release of his single titled “Self Care.” While he is credited by many of his fans to have a diverse inventory of styles and sounds, he continues the same trend with this latest song.
While “Self Care” highlights the usual flow and delivery that we identify Mac Miller by, the song elevates itself compared to his last few releases. The single is almost six minutes in length, as it can be seen as a two-part song.
The first part is more trap based with a synth-driven melody paired with loose melodic flows. In contrast, the second part is much more expansive with the instrumentation and overall feel as well. When listening, the two parts can be broken down to first feeling trapped, and then loose and free.
The two themes of being “trapped” and then “free” are heavily reflected in the video as the first three minutes are primarily filmed with Miller inside a wood coffin while trying to break himself out. Immediately when listening, it is extremely clear that Miller has complete artistic freedom with this release, and everything that is heard from start to finish feels entirely authentic.
