Lupe Fiasco has secured his place on Mount Olympus amongst the immortals of hip-hop, but it’s nice to see he isn’t resting on his laurels. Samurai, Fiasco’s ninth album, came out last year to widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike. Samurai was created with producer Soundtrakk and long-time manager Charley “Chill” Patton. Samurai DX marks the first time all three collaborators worked on a project together, making it the perfect candidate for bonus content.
The first single pack from Samurai DX is out now. “Samurai + Palaces” (feat. Troy Tyler) spins two fan favorites with some added verses from Lupe and Troy Tyler. The “Palaces” remix is a serene song, and its music video matches the vibe perfectly. I couldn’t help but think of Mac Miller’s “Stay” video and how beaches and hip-hop bars are a match made in heaven.
Samurai DX arrives in digital and physical formats on August 22nd via 1st & 15th and Thirty Tigers.

When Fiasco isn’t adding to his impressive discography, he’s knocking out side quests with the best of them. He was a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Fiasco’s “GHOTIING MIT: Public Art,” was part art installation and part live music performance. Nine songs inspired by art on MIT’s campus, each song was recorded on site and overseen by the MIT List Visual Arts Center. Lupe also joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute.
You can catch Lupe Fiasco on tour later this summer with Cypress Hill, Atmosphere, and The Pharcyde for the upcoming “Dank Daze of Summer” tour, which kicks off this August.
