Word Around the Sound is… Spokane’s Lucky You Lounge announced that they would be closing their doors at the end of August. The beloved venue has hosted numerous events that have supported and highlighted many of the independent artists in the region. It has been a safe place for performers to hone their skills and grow their fanbase.
On Tuesday, August 29th, an all-star lineup of artists from around the region will take the stage to bid the venue a very hip-hop farewell.
The event will span both stages with two separate experiences to soak in. Upstairs, you’ll find some of Spokane’s finest representing for the city with Jang the Goon, T.S. the Solution, Kung Fu Vinyl, Exzac Change and Iyzlow Matisse, and Truehoods performing. The doors will open at 7pm and tickets are $10 in advance or $20 at the door.
Downstairs, Have U Heard?! has curated a lineup featuring Oblé Reed, Nobi, All Day Trey, and Yonny. All of the artists on the lineup have had their names buzzing around the region as of lately and are about to put on a historic show as the curtain draws on the venue. Hip-Hop’s farewell in the Lucky You Basement is free to attend with music starting at 8pm.
A Hip-Hop Farewell to the Lucky You Lounge
Taylar Elizza Beth “Summertime Callin’” feat. Hannah Ramone (prod. WD4D)
Warm summer nights are rare in the Northwest. We only have a brief window where we can step out of the house into the late night without worrying about a jacket. These are the few liberating times where we can fuck around in whatever outfit we want without even thinking about the weather ruining our evening. Taylar Elizza Beth captures this feeling in her latest single, “Summertime Callin’,” where it’s after midnight and she is on the prowl.
Jesse Leer “Figure”
Close Your Eyes and allow Jesse Leer to paint figures in your mind through his luscious soundscapes. His latest release, “Figure,” is a sunshine daydream that takes you on a journey from start to finish with bright melodies, robust drums, and some ethereal overtones. The way he’s built the melodies, each layer adds another chapter to the story keeping your ears engaged in anticipation wondering in what direction the song will go.
Ten Thousand Rats “Orange Hoodie”
As smoke season falls upon the PNW and we inch closer to fall, the collaboration project from Andy Savoie and Jesse Desean have released a haunting new single. “Orange Hoodie” captures how frightening the life of a Black man in America can be, commenting on how racial prejudices still heavily influence police officers across the nation. Catch the Ten Thousand Rats live show at Bad Bar on Saturday, September 9 (check the details at the end of the article).
Oblé Reed “downsize.”
Recently, Oblé Reed released his first single since dropping his debut project LINDENAVE! The song “downsize.” focuses on growth and the struggles that come with the concept of downsizing to the essentials, whether that be within relationships or possessions or use of time, in order to push through life in a positive manner. Oblé was also recently featured on KEXP with a live in-studio performance that put a bit of a punk rock twist on some of his songs.
Chanarah “Reality is Just Pretend” feat. Taylar Elizza Beth
As if you just ate a bunch of shrooms and floated off down a lazy river, Chanarah and Taylar Elizza Beth are here to reassure you that “Reality is Just Pretend.” Their newest single explores the fantastical idea that nothing is inherently real, and we just perceive the world to be something substantial. But it also celebrates being in the moment and really soaking up what’s happening because everything is made up and nothing is for certain so just live your life with confidence in whoever it is that you want to be.

L$P “No Answer”
L$P’s latest release, “No Answer” is a floaty track that tells a tale of romance. Her smooth crooning vocals spit some laid-back rhymes that fill the beat out like blunt smoke. This is just a small offering before her debut studio album X: Call Me W$LF is released in September 2023.
Pricy My Bad
We’ve heard reports coming from our sister city in Oregon that tragically some motherfucker has scuffed up a fresh pair of all white Air Force 1’s because they were too distracted by a recent album release. Portland rapper Pricy just released his follow up statement to the incident saying, My Bad. Seemingly, he didn’t know how much chaos the project would incite.
The 11-track album flexes the best parts of Pricy’s flows with a variety of approaches to his delivery throughout. Most of the beats are riding on Dayton’s, exploring a variety of funk and soul samples that capture the essence of the West Coast. I couldn’t help but throw a few of these tracks onto my playlist.
