Limp Bizkit was one of the biggest acts of the early 2000s. Their music dominated MTV, radio, and Walkman devices on school buses for years. They’ve brought back a fresh rendition of their classic sound on the newly released “Out of Style” video from the 2021 album, Still Sucks.
The rap-metal cross-over band touched on two popular styles and grabbed fans from each section. After years at the top, criticism eventually pulled the band from cultural rock stars to being labeled corny by many. In less than a decade, Fred Durst went from one of the most recognized names in pop culture to a diss you would call someone with a frat boy style. Regardless of where you stand on the thin line of love and hate, Limp Bizkit will forever hold a place in pop culture.
Growing up as a hip-hop fan, I always enjoyed the “N 2 Gether Now” record Limp Bizkit collaborated on with DJ Premier and Method Man. Additionally, growing up as a white kid in the early 2000s that lived in a predominately white community, there was no escaping Limp Bizkit regardless of your opinion of their music. I suppose I preferred hearing their music over the majority of tracks some of my peers would play. I’m not quite sure what happened at the end of their reign but outside of their album, Still Sucks, released in the last few years, the group has laid low.
“Out Of Style” is not only super Limp Bizkit, but also classic 2000s. It’s the Nu-Metal sound baked in a semi-comedic music video. This visual feels like the modern-day version of something you would have caught on TRL back in 2003. Their just having fun jamming in a garage while making use of political figures and corny dance moves. Someone queue Blink 182, Britney Spears, and whatever other pop star was crushing the most requested list back then and you’d think nothing has changed in the last 20 years except for the technology.
The video is rather simple visually aside from the use of Deep Fake tech that shows the band as world leaders, and Tom Cruise because Tom Cruise is practically a world leader. See Vladimir Putin, Joe Biden, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Xi Jinping, Kim Jong-un, and the king of Scientology and impossible fighter jet missions all in one visual.
I’m not quite sure if I enjoy this song but I truly enjoy the nostalgia of this record and enjoyed playing it a few times before writing this piece.
