The Light Pack: Three New Futuristic Boom-Bap Tracks From Joey Bada$$ After Three Years Of Silence

Joey Bada$$ is back with a new set of singles that are released under the name The Light Pack. The Brooklyn-based rapper skyrocketed to fame early on in his career. This is no mistake due to his raw emotive tone and his genius bars. These qualities have made him hugely known and respected throughout hip-hop since the release of his 1999 tape at the age of 17. With albums such as ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$ and B4.DA.$$, it put him on an untouchable level. With his most recent release with The Light Pack, he’s given us something that echoes his original beat selection and extremely powerful themes.

His single pack is divided up by three songs: “The Light,” “No Explanation” featuring Pusha T, and “Shine.” On the EP cover, each track bears the name of either “Mind,” “Body,” or “Soul” in parentheses. Through the entirety of all songs, his lyrics are at the forefront of the project. On his song “The Light,” some of the most powerful and memorable are conveyed:

“Now world domination by determination / This is mumble rap extermination / This is Godly interpolation / This is that “Who your top five?” conversation / Type of rap that fuck a Grammy nomination.”

-Joey Bada$$ “The Light”

Throughout the journey of all three songs, he displays his classic boom-bap style. He also adds new and intriguing sounds that point to his vibe in the future. It’s no secret his fans have been eager for new music, and he’s definitely delivering. He also gave us some magical and cinematic visuals for the first track off the EP “The Light.” This first track was also mixed by Seattle’s Tyler Dopps.

At the beginning of the music video for “The Light,” Bada$$ gives us the full meaning behind the visuals:

“On June 16th, 2020 I chose to partake in a traditional voodoo ceremony in search of my rebirth. My purpose with this visual is to inspire Black people to realize their power and take it back, as I did. Don’t be afraid of who you are, that’s their job. We are magic.”
