Two local Spokane artists, Oliver Shawe and Item9, have built up some buzz for themselves off their latest joint track “Issup.” Mastered by Spokane legend and RMR homie T.S. the Solution and directed by Lledrow, the two artists really bring the city together on this one.
Oliver Shawe and Item9 have been doing their own things as artists/creatives for a minute now. Item even founded a growing local brand called Glenrose Media, a digital creation and clothing company. Shawe, meanwhile, is a long-standing member of the scene and a name that’s bubbled up several times now.
Coming together for “Issup,” the two create a jig that flows with an infectious energy you can’t shake. Shouting “Issup” along with their names, it acts as a role call to help get the crowd into it. The effect is something you feel even when listening alone at home or in your car.
“Issup” In Spokane
The beat for “Issup” is absolutely nasty. A low grumbly bass and organ start out the track with a sort of “bad guy” feel, basically letting us know they out here and aren’t some dudes to sleep on. They’ll match bars or they’ll match the smoke; either way, they’re here for it all and aren’t being quiet about it.
Item9 starts out the track with an air of confidence and swagger, catapulting the song into one of those window-down bangers you want people to hear as your car rattles down the road. Oliver brings his own energy to the video that I can personally appreciate. Coming in with a grimier rap style, I can’t help but see a little Maxo Kream in his approach.
It’s dope to see homegrown talent making moves in an area that has only recently seen national attention. But in true PNW form, Spokane is starting to produce top-level professionals in several fields. From music with Jango and 1800 YoungSmoke to the newly crowned Women’s Bantamweight Champion Julianna Pena, who defeated Amanda Nunoz last night for the belt. And of course, we got to keep an eye on rising UFC star Terrance Mckinney.
All that amazing talent, and Oliver Shawe and Item9 are right there with them making moves to become masters of their crafts. It can be a long and arduous journey to the top but these two are stepping in the right direction.
