The gravity bong has been a huge part of the cannabis users’ equipment arsenal for some time. It may be their daily driver or just something special that they only bring out when friends are over. Typically, though, these are homemade smoking devices that utilize some easy-to-find parts that can be found around the house.
What You Need
- An empty Gatorade bottle or something similar
- A socket
- Small metal screen, aluminum foil, or bowl piece
- A knife
- A lighter
- Pliers
Building Instructions
- Empty the bottle of any remaining liquid.
- There are two options for this next step. You can either: A) poke a small hole in the side of the bottle right at the bottom, or B) you can slice the bottom completely off. I prefer the second choice because it allows you to slam the bottle back into the water to push all the smoke quickly into your lungs. Set this piece aside for now.
- Putting the bowl piece together has a couple of different methods. Personally, I like to hold the lid with a pair of pliers then heat up the center with a lighter. This softens the plastic and allows you to push the socket through the top. The socket will serve as your bowl piece. If using a store-bought bowl piece, once you soften the plastic, push the stem of the bowl through the center of the lid.
- If using the socket method, place the screen or aluminum foil inside to stop the weed from falling through. When using aluminum foil, make sure to poke small holes in the bottom for air flow.

How To Use Your Gravity Bong
If you cut the bottom of the bottle off, you will want to fill a sink up with water. Make sure to take the lid off of the bottle while you are setting everything up. When placing the bottle in the water, you’ll want the water to come up to the narrow part of the bottle just below the lid. You can try this step with the lid on, but you’ll just launch your weed everywhere.
Now, while lighting the bowl you’ll want to slowly pull the bottle out of the water. This will create a vacuum and pull all the smoke down into the bottle. Be careful not to pull the bottle all the way out of the water, as you need to keep the seal. Unscrew the lid once you have about half an inch of bottle left in the water. Place your mouth over the top of the bottle to prevent any smoke from escaping. Slowly press the bottle back into the water, this will push all the smoke into your lungs. You can also slam the bottle down quickly to accomplish the same thing, but you might cough a little.
Alternatively, if you left the bottom on and just poked a hole in the bottle, fill the bottle up and plug the hole with your finger. Remove your finger while lighting the bowl at the same time. This will pull all the smoke into the bottle. Remove the lid when all the water is out. Place your mouth over the end of the bottle and inhale. It might take a few tries, but you will clear out all the smoke eventually. The longer you let it sit the worse it is going to taste.
