Hot Music Friday Featuring Lil Durk, Tove Lo, Janelle Monáe and More

We take pride in flavoring our Hot Music Friday lists with a broad selection of seasonings and this week’s picks display that through and through. As we enter the second weekend of June, we’re reaching for songs within arm’s reach as well as some that require some stretching.

The past, present and future all cross paths this week, so buckle up!

Hot Music Friday – June 9, 2023

“War Bout It” – Lil Durk (feat. 21 Savage)

There’s something deeply satisfying about contrasting personalities working together. It turns out thaLil Durk’s high-energy delivery pairs perfectly with 21 Savage’s laid-back flow. It’s dynamics like these that stand out in hip-hop today, so we’re proud to bring some attention to this collaboration on Hot Music Friday.

“100 Bars” – BabyTron

This one took some work, and for that reason alone, BabyTron deserves some shine. Of course, the song is pretty dope too, so that certainly helps. By walking us through 100 different shades of rap, the Michigan spitter has made it clear that he got bars for days.

“Be Who You Are” – Jon Batiste, J.I.D, NewJeans, Cat Burns & Camilo

Remember what we were saying about flavor earlier? This might be the best point of reference for that claim, because “Be Who You Are” is just overflowing with character. This All-Star crossover between Jon BatisteJ.I.DNewJeansCat Burns and Camilo is a pleasant reminder of just how joyous art can be. To that point, we consider it our duty to bring that happiness straight to you on Hot Music Friday.

“I like u” – Tove Lo

Very few artists churn out one hit after another like Swedish diva Tove Lo. She is the textbook definition of a pop star and perhaps the most likeable example of one in the music industry today. Given her track record of mass-producing bangers, it’s not at all surprising that she’s delivered yet another one.

“Saturday Morning” – Eels

Even though it’s Hot Music Friday, we felt it might be nice to give you something for the following day as well. We had to reach quite far back to bring you this classic by the Eels, but it almost felt necessary. After all, this list is to brighten up your entire weekend and not just one day of it.

The Age of Pleasure – Janelle Monáe

We’ve all been waiting for this one for one simple reason: Janelle Monáe simply doesn’t miss. It’s almost as though she’s incapable of producing anything that’s short of brilliant, so our expectations for this new record are very much in tune with her standard of excellence thus far.

– Kenny Mason

Kenny Mason has a bright future, and you can’t convince us otherwise. The 28-year-old has constantly brought something new to the table and pushed the boundaries, and that is precisely why he leaves a lasting impression. In that regard, his new album is no different from his previous endeavors.

Space Heavy – King Krule

One of the most unique artists of today, King Krule’s greatest accomplishment has been that he has never been boring. This is quite impressive considering the number of soft and slow songs he makes, but he always finds new and creative ways to make his songwriting compelling. That is why it would be a crime to not give him a push on Hot Music Friday.

Tiny Desk Concert – Unknown Mortal Orchestra

We tried something a little different this week and decided to serve up this tight new Tiny Desk set by Unknown Mortal Orchestra. During this brief set, the New Zealand indie outfit performs five fan favorites and it’s simply fantastic. See for yourself!
