The creative and funky spoken-word MC who goes by name of Hobo Johnson has been taking the industry by storm. Frank Lopes Jr. has been shaking things up with his groundbreaking music approach as of late. His approach, which is backed by a band named The Lovemakers, is the furthest thing from what anyone’s heard. With nobody to compare him to, Tyler the Creator is someone that comes to mind when trying to compare Hobo Johnson to another artist.
Who at one point was kicked out of his house, was then forced to stay in his 1994 Toyota Corolla. Shortly after all the commotion, Hobo Johnson was born. In his latest album, the rise of hobo johnson, he speaks on his previous experiences, silly jokes and political issues within America today. His honest storytelling has attracted people all over that want to be free and be themselves.
On Friday at the Showbox, a sellout crowd came to feel just that; to listen to the same music that sets them free. With the help of The Lovemakers, Hobo was able to set the tone right from the get-go. Performing without his shoes, the MC stormed from side to side making facial gestures that might scare the weary away. His passion shined bright and it was apparent he was giving it his all; it was a successful night for them to say the least.
As he moves forward with his future, it will be interesting to see where he takes things. He’s an artist that is similar to so many in his genre, with the MC-like style, while at the same time is so far different than everyone else. Over time there are particular artists that break down barriers for others to follow. Hobo Johnson might just be doing with his style for artists that aspire to be like him. The only way to find out if Hobo Johnson continues to break down barriers is to stay connected and see where he takes things.
