Green Hop is a dispensary down in Portland not only fulfilling your recreational needs, but also educating you on the vibrant intertwining history of cannabis and hip-hop. The first of its kind, Green Hop brings a commonly known fact to the forefront—the genre of hip-hop has strong ties to marijuana in both its aesthetic and lyrical content. Green Hop took this fact and built their whole business around those who enjoy both hip-hop and cannabis, why didn’t we think of it first, right?
Hip-hop and cannabis have been intertwined since the genre rose up from its roots in the streets of the 1970’s. DJ Kool Herc laid the foundation, Grandmaster Flash created the technique, and Afrika Bambaataa organized to help birth a culture called Hip Hop.
Green Hop Is Portland’s Hip-Hop Themed Pot Shop
Commercially, the Sugar Hill Gang paved the way for Run D.M.C., then groups like N.W.A. in the late 80s. When Dr. Dre released his debut solo album, The Chronic, in 1992, it featured the unapologetic weed-smoking Snoop Doggy Dog, and hip-hop and cannabis have been fused ever since. But even Netflix makes it easy to hear this story in a couple different ways, some even straight from the mouths of these artists.
What strongly interests us with this brand, is our thriving efforts to throw one of our notorious hip-hop x cannabis industry events in Portland. Out the gate, these folks seem like they’re on the same page. We’ve already dipped our fingers into Portland recently to do a hip-hop event with The THESIS and We Out Here Magazine (that SOLD OUT) minus involvement from the cannabis industry—but we’re aiming to change that!
When we came back up to have the same showcase with THESIS and WOHM at Nectar Lounge in Fremont, it was also a major success, but some of our industry friends such as Honu set up a stellar booth! We see Oregon getting behind the idea that mutual, enjoyable, and profitable business can be done between those in both the music and cannabis industry, and the communities combined. And we want in on the action.
