Last month, Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate Gary Chambers of Louisiana released an ad that shows him smoking a cannabis blunt. He created this video as part of his campaign; it is designed to help destigmatize weed and promote a path toward legalization, especially in the South. This is the first time we’ve seen a political candidate take an approach this bold, and it has certainly had people talking and the internet buzzing.
“I hope this ad works to not only destigmatize the use of marijuana, but also forces a new conversation that creates the pathway to legalize this beneficial drug, and forgive those who were arrested due to outdated ideology,” Chambers said in the ad.

RMR: In terms of destigmatizing cannabis in the South, what do you think are some of the essential steps that need to be taken in order to see actual change?
Gary Chambers: I think what you see in us: being willing to do it publicly. When you talk about destigmatizing, [it’s] making sure that people have a platform who have a voice, who have credibility and respect, [and they] use that platform to let people know that they do this; that it is not controversial; that it is something that should be normalized for those of legal age to consume; and that we need to move beyond prohibition. And so I think that when we’re willing to do it publicly, that gives us the opportunity to destigmatize.

RMR: Describe the current state of cannabis in Louisiana; what’s going on?
Gary Chambers: The state of Louisiana is growing cannabis in the state while people are still being either ticketed or incarcerated for cannabis use, and that’s not right.

RMR: Do you have any favorite strains or types of weed that you enjoy personally?
Gary Chambers: Right now? I like Apple Fritter.
RMR: When did you first get introduced to cannabis, and when did you start smoking?
Gary Chambers: Probably about six years ago I started smoking. True story, I was dating somebody; in the process of us having conversations, I started smoking with her and I then realized I keep the weed and let her go. And so, that’s when I started smoking. It didn’t work out [with her], but the weed did.
