I try not to compare artists to others, but in this case, I can’t help but hear the influence. Falon Sierra just released a new song, Sprained Ankles, with producer Pete Kim. The song and video are both scarily reminiscent of something Erykah Badu would do. Maybe it’s the fact that their voices are in the same register. Maybe it’s their poetic soul speaking over neo-jazz-hop beats. Or maybe I’m just really high and wanted to make that connection.
In any case, the video even has a broken down atmospheric 90’s vibe to the cinematography. It tells a story, and has any avid Baduist would know, she is always telling a story. Earlier this year Falon took second place at the MoPOP’s SoundOff! competition. I’m loving all the classic R&B sounds that are really starting to emerge in Seattle.
