For people like me, comic-con is the mecca, the holy land, the mother ship, the cradle of imagination. Comic-con has long been the flagship event series for pop culture and the comic book industry. Emerald City Comic Con 2019 (ECCC) is gearing up at the Washington Convention Center as we speak.
What To Expect/Pre-Game
ECCC is four days of epic fandom. This is where all of pop culture’s greatest creatives, artists, and entertainers mesh with the fans who revere their life’s work. You can expect to see cosplay on all levels, from world-class-award-winning to Walmart Halloween style.
Before heading to the floor, grab coffee and breakfast at Serious Pie and Biscuit in Seattle’s West Lake Center. About a mile away from the convention, this place is famed for their chicken and biscuit breakfast sandwich. If you’re looking for something closer and faster, try Cherry Street Coffee House on Olive Way.
Convention Floor
Walking into ECCC is like getting hit with an imagination bomb, scattering mesmerizing shrapnel all over the showroom floor. The floor is divided into three main sections: Artist Alley, Writers Block and Exhibition Hall. Artist Alley is filled with some of the industry’s most talented artists from people who draw, to people who color, and everyone in between.
Writers Block features literary stars who write comics, graphic novels and books. I’m most excited to talk with the artists about their path into the industry. Exhibition Hall features panels that dive deep into your favorite content and screenings; featuring sneak-peeks of up and coming shows from AMC and National Geographic.
ECCC Highlights
Seattle’s comic-con may be small compared to its international counterpart in San Diego, but our beautiful city can still attract some heavy hitters. This year, the two leads from Stranger Things and Brienne of Tarth from Game Of Thrones will be there to greet and hang out with fans before the show returns for its final season.
This year’s convention will also put a premium on the gaming sector, with two of the region’s biggest gaming brands, Nintendo and Microsoft, setting up shop.
Tbe League Of Libations is a collaboration between comic culture and Seattle’s best microbreweries. Four breweries will be supplying the convention’s beer garden with adult-beverages for all! Look for Seattle Cider Co’s dry cider, Fremont Brewing’s Dark Heron IPA, Firestone Walker’s Mocha Merlin Milk Stout and Hopworks Urban’s Wave Train Vienna Amber Ale.
Post Con Revelry
If you’re a couple of beers deep leaving the convention’s beer garden, why not keep the ECCC revelry going at one of downtown’s dopest dining spots. Potbelly Sandwich Shop, Barolo Ristorante, and Din Tai Fung are all just down the hill in Westlake Center. You can find Bok a Bok Korean chicken, Big Mario’s Pizza, and the Lost Lake Cafe just up the hill.
