We are all big foodies over here at RMR, but none of the group are quite ‘Philly Cheese’rs’ like myself. I love cheese steaks. If my future wife were to allow it, our wedding would feature small Philly Cheesesteaks for appetizers, full philly’s for dinner, and burgers to wash down the phillys for desert. That being said, it is HARD for one to find a legitimate philly cheese steak hoagie on this side of the map. Whenever I have been on the east coast the hoagie god’s and phillys in Pennsylvania are abundant and oh so good.
When I lived in the Portland area during 07-09 my roommate and relocated east coast native, Montane, put me onto 5th Ave Steaks downtown. Since they are only open until about 3pm I used to try and gather my roommates for a trip downtown early in the day, on a daily basis, just to get my hands on the aluminum foil wrapped greasy sandwich. 5th Ave Steaks has a small stand right in Pioneer square and a larger truck over on 5th Ave next to the other food carts between Oak and Stark. I forget the owner’s name but tell him Respect My Region sent you and bring him a bottle of Crown Royal as a thank you gesture for supplying your mouth with the best party it will have for some time.
The prices on the menu are very reasonable for lunch time with Cheese Steaks being $4.25 for a small, $5.25 for a medium, and $6.25 for a large. They also have some awesome burgers for $3.75-$4.75
Mitch’s recommendation: get a Medium Cheesesteak and a Cheeseburger for 45 minute post lunch snack.
