RMR: What’s good? Why don’t you go ahead and tell us who you are –
Wassup I go by the name DJ Seko and I’m based out of Vancouver, Canada.
RMR: Were you born and raised in Vancouver?
Nah, I was born and raised in Guatemala and moved to Vancouver in the late 90’s.
RMR: How did you first get into DJing and what inspired that?
When I was a kid my dad was a radio DJ and my godfather was a mobile dj in Guatemala so since an early age I’ve been around that and when I moved to Canada I got introduce to hip-hop culture and its elements. For example, I used to do graffiti and was hanging out with graffiti heads. What got my attention to pursuing djing was watching old graffiti movies like Wild Style and seeing the DJs spin and I felt a connection with it …and I just knew wanted to do that!
RMR: What would you consider your style to be?
A versatile, party rocker, record-breaking kind of DJ.
RMR: Who is a DJ, past or present that has inspired you most?
Past: Roc Raida, Jazzy Jeff, Triple Threat DJs.
Present: A-Trak, Four Color Zack, my crew, which is called The Freshest and hometown heroes Hedspin, Flipout and Jay Swing.
RMR: What is your rule of thumb on how long you should generally play a song before you switch it up?
One verse and a chorus or sometimes just the chorus lol.
RMR: What is one go-to song that you’ll play on every single set?
There are a few, but definitely Travis Scott – Antidote
RMR: How is the scene in Vancouver? Do you feel like its strong or weak?
The music scene I feel like it’s still growing, but we definitely have a lot of talented artists here and that come out of Vancouver!
The nightlife and party scene is very strong, there are lots of good parties and concerts that come through Vancouver.
RMR: Do you do any DJing at weddings? or online? Or anything outside of music festivals?
I don’t do weddings but if my close friends or family ask me I would. It really depends on the situation and the budget for anyone else.
I have an online radio show called ‘The Squeeze’ live on Sundays 6-8pm PT on saveonradio.com
I also DJ 4 times a week sometimes more at the main hip-hop clubs in Vancouver if you want to know my residencies and where I’ll be next, check my IG @djseko
RMR: How did you get the opportunity to DJ for Lil Skies at FVDED In The Park Music Festival?
I got booked to be one of the DJs to play in between acts on the main stage all day and I guess Lil Skies didn’t come with a DJ so he was looking for an experience hip-hop DJ my name came up! I went to meet him and our energy vibed and after that, we ended up performing together and it was flawless.
RMR: What has been the biggest challenge about being a DJ?
I’ve done remixes and made beats sampling old rare records but composing music has been the most challenging for me.
RMR: Do you have anything big planned for the next year and going forward?
I have a clothing line called Stickup Kids (IG @thestickupkids) follow along, I’ve got more things to come with that.
Got some other stuff cooking but for now gonna keep rocking these parties but you never know what could pop up so be on the lookout and follow my IG account @djseko You can also follow my Soundcloud: soundcloud.com/djseko and my Youtube Channel: youtube.com/thefreshest.
