Chicago based rapper Dam Primo is making huge moves in the game, most notably with the release of his EP titled Poe Richman (Story Of A Poor Rich Man). From start to finish, the project offers many different looks as the style and sound of each song is widely diverse. At the same time, the varying sounds flow well from one track to another due to Primo’s precise delivery and storytelling tendencies.
DAM Primo – Poe Richman (Story Of A Poor Rich Man)
The first track on Poe Richman (Story Of A Poor Rich Man) is titled “Nostalgia” featuring Decima. The upbeat synth and percussion heavy track is the perfect song to kick off the project. The smooth vocals from Decima pairs well with Primo’s tight yet highly rhythmical verses.
For the next track “MMXI”, it takes on a more aggressive tone with far more intense vocals and an instrumental that is lead by a heavy electric guitar. The third track “Entropy” also includes a contrasting vibe, as the laid-back instrumental supports the reflective yet realistic lyrics that Damn Primo raps throughout the entire song. After two upbeat tracks prior, it’s nice to have a more relaxed vibe. In addition, it fully showcases Primo’s lyrical and rapping abilities.
The fourth track “Poe Rich Man” moves back into the upbeat energy that was displayed in the first two tracks of the project. This track is especially interesting because it includes more hooks and riffs compared to the previous tracks. The layering of the vocals is especially compelling, as it enhances the catchy lines that Primo raps throughout.
One of the most impactful tracks on Poe Richman (Story Of A Poor Rich Man) is “Bad Trips and Epiphanies.” The rather minimal instrumental paves the way for Primo’s vocals to lead the track. His flows are especially interesting as he switches between triplet and duplet based rhythms. He also shares some of the most impactful lines with lyrics such as “They can take my life / but they can never kill my soul / my soul will live forever.”
The final track on the EP is titled “Annzioti” which is very conclusive to finish out the project. The integration of piano and backing strings adds greater depth to the track. Primo also addresses various topics which includes talking about dedication and trusting other people.
Overall, DAM Primo’s project Poe Richman (Story Of A Poor Rich Man) is a project that cannot be slept on. Primo’s precision with his delivery and lyrical creativity drives the project, with the support of equally creative and supportive instrumentals. The varying styles shown throughout keeps each song interesting, as there is never a dull moment on the 6 track EP.
