D. Mikey just released the Zips EP, produced by Beatsbyluca. To me, it’s a masterwork project. Taking me back to the original days of discovering Blue Scholars and Common Market on Bandcamp.
This EP is defined by slower beats built on heavy instrumentals and an east coast swagger. I couldn’t help but sway back and forth as they do in Night At The Roxbury.
“I keep it flippin with my brothers like we Hardy and shit”
“Rolled Now”
The horns and pianos make this project feel like it came out of a time capsule. It strays away from the heavily produced pattern that most mainstream music follows. Beatsbyluca’s simplicity shines, allowing D. Mikey to showcase his lyrical talents unabated. D. Mikey’s rhymes are filled with pop culture and stoner references. Listening to this makes my inner-child do backflips.
