It’s hard to drive through the Seattle metropolitan area without noticing one of the worst issues plaguing our country’s cities. Tents set up under bridges, makeshift shanty towns of tarps and cardboard boxes all throughout the city. The homelessness issues are completely unavoidable. Regardless of your moral feelings surrounding individual homeless people, we can all agree that something needs to be done to help them. Colorado’s cannabis industry has just pledged three-million dollars to fight their states homelessness problem, and many are hoping Washington does something similar. While Washington works on a long-term solution, some have taken it upon themselves to help in small ways. The Conscious Eatery is a business whose small contributions to the less fortunate comes in the form of dank gourmet sandwiches.
Conscious Eatery is a sandwich shop nestled in Seattle’s industrial district between Sodo and Georgetown. Conscious Eatery has donated over 7000 meals to homeless patrons since they opened up in 2016. They started as a simple catering service but jumped into the restaurant business after just five months of steady business. On top of donating an average of 547 meals every month, they partner with non-profits like Mary’s Place, White Center Food Bank, and Roots Young Adult Shelter.
Conscious Eatery makes sure their food stands on its own, sourced from Seattle. Their ingredients come from three main places, Charlie’s Produce, Grand Central Bakery, and Mac Donald Meat Co. This cuts transport time down from hours to minutes and ensures all of the food is as fresh as possible when its prepared for customers. They bake bread, squeeze juice, and make the soups from scratch every single day.
Their menu is highlighted by their artisan sandwiches. The Cuban sandwich is one I’ve had personally and it’s incredible. It’s simple, but the flavors all elevate one another into a visceral flavor experience. This beast of a wich features pulled pork and pork shoulder, swiss cheese, pickles with a whole grain mustard that was fantastic. I don’t even like mustard, plain yellow mustard is a vile substance, but this stuff added tangy warmth that balanced out the salty savory nature of the pork. Their menu also features a breakfast menu, salads, and can cater for your events so you can bring Conscious Eatery’s dankwiches directly to your friends and families.
“Roasting all meats, mixing all dressings and sauces, pressing our own juices, and constructing all soups from scratch- we refuse to take the easy way to ensure all of our food is delicious and made with love.”
