Cigarettes After Sex Release Third Album After Becoming Overnight Sensation 7 Years Ago

Alternative-indie band, Cigarettes After Sex, has just released their third new album this past month titled “X’s”.  While there have since been some mixed reviews on this new release, Cigarettes After Sex might actually be proving to the world through music that once again, less can sometimes be more.

Let’s take a look at just how far Cigarettes After Sex has come since their debut.

Better Late Than Never

Cigarettes After Sex was actually formed in El Paso, Texas by Greg Gonzalez, its lead vocalist and guitarist.  The band now also consists of drummer Jacob Tomsky, bass player Randy Miller, and keyboardist Phillips Tubbs.  Originally, these musicians were a struggling band in Brooklyn, New York, but this all changed after a four-year-old track went viral on YouTube.

Their debut EP titled “I.” was released in 2012 with a song called “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby”.  Four years later in 2016, this song started to rapidly gain views, now having over 35 million views on YouTube.  Cigarettes After Sex seemingly became a hit overnight with this viral song, growing their fanbase exponentially.

The band now has four released albums, “I.” which was released in 2012, “Cigarettes After Sex” released in 2017, “Cry” released in 2019, and now “X’s” which was just released.

One of the bands most popular songs since making it big is the gem “Apocalypse” which debuted on their 2017 album “Cigarettes After Sex”.  Many might recognize this mystical song, as we have seen its presence greatly on TikTok, as well as other social media platforms,  where users can use the song to indulge in their regrets and disparities, or sometimes just show themselves crying.

Cigarettes After Sex?

Some might be wondering where the band got their name, Cigarettes After Sex, and what it means.  The name actually came directly from an experience that Greg himself had with a woman who he used to sleep with, in a friends with benefits type of way.  He says this woman always used to smoke cigarettes after each time they were intimate with each other.  Greg says this encounter always used to put him in a peaceful mood.  Then one day, he realized that Cigarettes After Sex would be a pretty cool band name, so they went with it.

Now, the band is confident in their title and how it speaks to the romanticism of casual intimacy, which is a very common theme that threads all of the band’s music together.

New Album and Tour

Their new album, “X’s”, just released on July 12th with a total of 10 songs amounting to nearly 40 minutes of songs to wallow to, and maybe even cry to if you feel like it.  The most popular songs on the album thus far are “X’s”, “Tejano Blue” which the band just performed on The Tonight Show with Jimmey Kimmel a little over a week ago, and “Dark Vacay”.

Most of the band’s music can be tokened for experimenting with the dark side of pop, always giving the listener a moody headspace to visit when they feel like it.  Honestly, Cigarettes After Sex makes songs for people to feel like the main character, and they make songs for you to think about everything that has ever happened in your life ever.  Greg himself has even said that the scene where they picture their music is at a beach campfire in the night, something I think is pretty spot-on.

The band is also expected to go on tour this year very soon starting at the end of August on the 31st all the way to the end of November.  They have an extremely long list of cities that they will be performing at all over the world, such as Montreal, Amsterdam, Italy, Germany, England, here in the United States, and many more.
