When you can mix together earthy and sweet flavors together the right way they can truly complement each other. The Chocolate Blackberry strain is an interesting cultivar that tastes almost exactly like it smells. You’d normally assume this indica strain came from crossing Chocolate Kush and Blackberry Kush, but Bellingham’s High End Farms has gone a slightly different route. By crossing Blackberry Kush with Exotic Genetix’ Starfighter F2 you end up with a similar, yet unique terpene profile. High End Farms consistently impresses me with their hustle as an indoor Tier-1, as well as their well-grown pesticide-free weed.
The Chocolate Blackberry strain is one of the more unique cultivars I’ve seen from High End, whereas before I recall enjoying a classic strain from them, like their Sour Tangie. I was high-key interested in seeing how they would bring out the true colors of this earthy and spicy, yet berry-sweet strain. Looking at it, I was expecting the foliage to be darker, and maybe even hints of purple. It instead had more of the typical coloration I’d expect from a less aggressive hybrid strain, like GSC. Grassy-green with dark-orange pistils jutting out threw me off because this weed doesn’t smell like it looks.
Opening the jar I immediately got hit with a blast of sour-sweet berries that had a musky coating that told me this strain could be high in caryophyllene. Blackberry Kush and Starfighter are both known for this funky berry flavor, but by combining them it has definitely put that scent on swole. Handling the buds, I found a solid blanket of trichomes that made my fingers sticky, but not overly so. I found the density of the nug solid, with that satisfying crackle when you break it apart. More of the spicy, almost cheesy aroma came through when I did this.

After rolling it up and ripping through a sizable joint to myself, I got immediate berry terps. It almost reminded me of some classic DJ Short Blueberry for a second, but then a savory wave of spicy musk came in to blend with the berry flavor in a nutty, chocolatey way. If I had to guess the terps in order I’d go with caryophyllene, myrcene, and then probably limonene.
The more I smoked the joint I could taste a prevalent spiciness that immediately made me forget some nagging body pain. This is definitely the effect of the caryophyllene working with the THC. The high that came after was pleasant. I was lit with a mentally stimulating high at first, but slowly the heavy body high that comes with this strain took hold and I became less functional. The bed became the best option. The citrusy berry terps came in for the kill to quell my anxiety from the day and told me it was ok to rest.
