Carson Wentz Signs With The Los Angeles Rams

NFL free agent, Carson Wentz signs with the Los Angeles Rams. The deal includes a base salary of $1.165 million to become the latest quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams. This signing comes amid Matthew Stafford’s thumb injury.

The Latest For The Rams

In a surprising turn of events, the Los Angeles Rams have just signed veteran quarterback Carson Wentz. This deal comes on the heels of Rams’ starting quarterback, Matthew Stafford, suffering a thumb injury. The NFL is no stranger to the unexpected, and injuries to a star player can dramatically change the course of a team’s season. In fact, we saw this during week one of the 2023 NFL season, when Aaron Rodgers tore his achilles during his very first drive with the Jets.

Los Angeles Rams’ starting quarterback, Matthew Stafford, hurt his thumb during their week 8 loss against the Dallas Cowboys. Stafford, unable to return for week 9, left the Rams’ no choice but to play their backup quarterback, Brett Rypien. The Rams’ played disastrous against the Packers that week and lost 20-3. With the season beginning to crumble and no official time table for Stafford’s return, the Rams opted to sign free agent Carson Wentz.

Carson Wentz’s NFL Journey

Philadelphia Eagles

Wentz’s NFL journey has been marked by highs and lows. He started his career with the Philadelphia Eagles (2nd overall pick in 2016 draft). He led them to a solid 2017 season, but had to watch the team’s deep playoff run and Super Bowl victory from the sideline after injury. Over 5 seasons with the Eagles, Wentz amassed over 16,000 passing yards, 113 touchdowns and a passer rating of 89.2. Carson Wentz had a history of injury, forcing the Eagles to opt for more depth at quarterback position in 2020, drafting Jalen Hurts. This would lead to Wentz’s trade to the Colts in 2021.

Colts Trade For Wentz

With a fresh start in Indianapolis, Carson Wentz was aiming to rejuvenate his career. His season with the Colts started off hot, they were entering week 17 with a record of 9-6. They had a good shot at making the playoffs, but the season took a horrible turn during the last weeks. They blew a fourth quarter lead against the Raiders, and lost at home 23-20. Wentz would finish that game with just 148 passing yards and it didn’t get any better during week 18. They faced the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team with the worst record in the NFL for the second straight season. The Colts would lose in a humiliating fashion, final score was 26-11. Wentz finished what would be his last game with the Colts with 2 turnovers and 185 yards.

Wentz Release By Commanders

After a disappointing end to that season, the Colts would trade Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders. Wentz wasn’t able to accomplish much there either. He and his new team started the season 1-1 before playing Wentz’s first NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles. A game that Wentz would have liked to have as revenge game, ended up being a good old fashioned beat down. Carson Wentz would be sacked 9 times that day. The game was a home game for the Commanders, but you really couldn’t tell with all the Philadelphia fans in attendance. It ended up being one of Wentz’s worst performances. The Washington Commanders would eventually cut him from the team.

Before being riddled with injuries, fans of the NFL considered Wentz to be a future face of the league. A lot has changed since being drafted in 2016, but it’s never too late for a comeback. If Wentz can find a way to make plays outside of the pocket and pair that with his arm strength, he may be a great fit for the Rams’ offensive scheme. With Stafford continuing to age, and now facing a thumb injury, this could be a great opportunity for Carson Wentz to reinvent his career.

Carson Wentz Signs With The Rams – Will He Bounce Back?

NFL fans worldwide will be eagerly watching to see how Wentz’s signing impacts the Los Angeles Rams and whether or not they can turn their 3-6 season around. The Veteran quarterback is expected to make his Rams debut after their bye week, on November 19th against Seattle Seahawks. The bye week should offer Carson Wentz an opportunity to familiarize himself with the playbook, facilitating better synergy with the team and build chemistry with his receivers like Super Bowl LVI MVP, Cooper Kupp.
