California’s most recognized creative agency, High Rise, recently teamed up with Jon Cappetta of High Times and Jimi Devine of LA Weekly, to produce a documentary showcasing what legal cannabis in Thailand is like. Although California has long held the title for the epicenter of cannabis in pop culture and legalization, many places across the globe have contributed immensely to the progression of this plant.
Thailand is one of those legendary places and they recently legalized cannabis on June 9th, 2022.
The High Rise Bangkok documentary comes from individuals who have a pulse on the coveted Cali culture and the community. This gives them a unique angle exploring this new frontier and highlighting the culture from within.
Enter, the High Rise Bangkok documentary.
Currently, Thailand has legalized cannabis but regulation hasn’t quite set in. It’s essentially a free-for-fall with vendors and dispensaries popping up everywhere.
In this documentary, the High Rise squad captures moments that shine a light and craft a window into another world. This new cannabis-infused Thailand looks reminiscent of the early days of California and from the conversations had, it’s clear there is an air of joy surrounding all of the buds.
It’s believed that Thailand was introduced to cannabis from India, as both historically call the plant Ganja. Classic strains like Purple Thai were developed in the area and of course the legendary Thai Stick.
While the Thai Stick is now more commercially known as a form of Cannagar, the original version was legitimately Thai cannabis packed around a hemp stalk with wire holding it together. It was widely known as some of the best cannabis in the world during the 70s.
Throughout the 30-minute documentary, the crew travels through the city of Bangkok exploring both cannabis and local culture. Their tour guides take them to a plethora of dispensaries that seemingly coexist side by side everywhere and showcase local food, art, commerce, and culture.
It’s clear from some of the locals that California strains hold influence as expected, but the classic Asian and Indian landraces still hold a special place for smokers in Thailand.
After checking out the film, one thing is certain. Cannabis is quickly getting legal around the world and the culture, community, science, all of it, is really starting to pick up pace.
