Can CBD Help With Anxiety or Depression?

Can CBD Help With Anxiety or Depression?

Even today there is a lot of speculation about what exactly CBD treats, and by what means it administers relief. Cannabidiol (CBD), one of the many cannabinoids found in cannabis, has proven itself capable of treating joint pain, insomnia, seizures, and some forms of anxiety.

Where tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) yields a psychoactive, euphoric effect, CBD’s properties focus on the body and nervous system. Consuming CBD yields a “body high” as many call it. In fact, larger quantities of cannabidiol are found on average in indica strains of cannabis.

So this begs the question: If THC is the primary psychoactive in cannabis, could CBD really treat emotional conditions such as anxiety and depression? Well surprisingly enough, yes it does, and has in the past.

What Are the Best Products for Anxiety?

There’s a wide variety of CBD products in the market right now with differing purposes. When you are shopping though, you should look for full-spectrum CBD products. While some companies will produce products only containing CBD, often at a cheaper manufacturing cost, other shops will infuse all of the cannabinoids found in hemp. Cannabinoids and terpenes are the secret behind variety in CBD, and without them you may find a different experience entirely.

Our very own shop features products by M6 Labs, including full-spectrum tinctures. Cannabinoids including isomers of D9-THC are proven to influence the experience of CBD. RMR’s 1000mg “Chill” tincture is an example of a full-spectrum CBD product that may help with relaxation and sleep.

How Does CBD Help With Anxiety?

As mentioned above, CBD is already known to help with insomnia. What you may not already know is that insomnia is often a symptom of anxiety or depression, and is not always a standalone condition.

A person’s serotonin uptake regulates emotional conditions of this caliber. Non-professional communities often refer to serotonin as the “happy” or “good” chemical. While it is not necessarily this simple, serotonin regulation is the focal point of treatments for emotional disorders. CBD, while not psychoactive, still has an effect on a person’s serotonin levels. Scientists have not figured exactly by what mechanism this works.

Since 2011, there have been a handful of studies working to determine correlation between CBD and forms of anxiety. The results are not always 100% conclusive, however. The conventional methods of treating Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) were determined to only be effective 30% of the time in 2002

With this in mind, one may even be able to consider CBD a more realistic treatment than SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) in certain scenarios. That’s not even to mention the list of side-effects that come with antidepressants.

A double-blind study in 2011 revealed that individuals with SAD who were administered CBD felt more comfortable during public speaking. Another study in 2019 found that 80% of its subjects reported reduced anxiety after taking CBD. 70% found their sleep more restful. In 2015, a review of 49 studies concluded that CBD is a viable option for treatment of multiple anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, OCD, and PTSD.

You can click on any of these studies to read more for yourself. As you can see though, the evidence has become more than substantial over the years. CBD may not be a one-and-done solution for anxiety, but neither are SSRI’s or anti-psychotics for that matter.

The best part about cannabidiol is that its side-effects are slim-to-none, meaning much less risk compared to pharmaceuticals. Patients treated with a 100% CBD product (remember what I said about full-spectrum CBD?) experienced drowsiness, nausea, fatigue, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. These aren’t pretty experiences for a human, but they are considerably less dangerous than potential side-effects of anti-anxiety medication.

So all in all, if you or someone you know experiences moderate anxiety or depression, or you know someone who did not find success with medication, then CBD might be the next option to try for them.
