In the midst of a heated election, an all time high coronavirus case load in the US, and the chilling nip of winter at our heels– we all need a relief. CamelPhat released their well anticipated album ‘Dark Matter’ Oct. 30th. 21 songs bring the release in at an hour and a half offering a needed serenity.
Some of the tracks were released earlier in the year including, but not limited to, Breath, Rabbit Hole, Be Someone, and Cola. The most notable attribute the duo brought us on this album is their ability to combine genres seamlessly.
Tracks such as Spektrum, Dance With my Ghost, and Phantoms have a very techo-like feel to them. Yet cuts like Blackbird, Wildfire, and Easier are progressed forward by beautiful vocals that carry that track fluidly.
All this in mind, there are still some insane house tracks, such as Expect Nothing, that possess the mesmerizing rhythm of driving bass, melodic high-hats, and synths that put you in a trance.
I offer you an opportunity to smoke a little, drink a little, lay back, and play this album from start to finish. Electronic music plays a lot of roles in the music industry. One of those is being a tool to escape in times like these.
I’d feel wrong to end this article with commentary about the current state of our country. So I leave you with this.
Most of us are focused on the on-going election, but where we stand is far above red against blue. We’re facing an increasing global pandemic, an economic crisis as a result of such, debilitating affects of climate change, and an technological era that has being to loosen the fabric of our society as we’ve known it.
Even so, take a moment for yourself and lose yourself in an album intended to take your mind away. The EMD community has always been there for its community and now is no different. Let us thank all the artists who continue to release beautiful music in such an ugly time.
