Following the release of his last project Eugene, Calvin Valentine is back with his upcoming instrumental beat tape titled Plush Seats. While the official release is expected in March or April, Valentine has dropped a series of tracks from the project to hold us over until the release date. Although Valentine is known as a singer and rapper, this instrumental beat tape showcases his many facets and abilities as a producer.
After giving the pre-release tracks a listen it is evident that Valentine is on his game as he demonstrates his flawless sampling abilities paired with instrumentals that have a combination of many different styles and genres. With the majority of hip-hop artists using more trap-based instrumentals, it is refreshing to hear a project that is far way from that realm sonically.
With limited vocals heard on these tracks, it is apparent that Valentine is leaning on the depth and complexity of the music itself. Every track has the R&B, soul, and funk vibe while at the same time being tied in with a boom bap sound that will hit you right in the chest. What is most impressive is the care and precision Valentine has with his horn, string/synth, and vocal arrangements.
Each track is full in texture and unfolds in many exciting and unexpected ways. What is most notable is that while each track has a very full sound, there is enough space at the same time to allow the listener to experience each component in the song.
