It’s not every day we happen upon an artist like C.h.a.m.p. There’s a distinct consciousness driving his newest EP, “YOLO,” as the project leads us through a group of outstanding tracks. This is C.h.a.m.p’s second EP, wasting no time in revealing his potential. With the city of Mesquite in Texas in his grasp already, it’s likely we’ll see C.h.a.m.p continue to climb.
C.h.a.m.p stands for “Change Happens At My Pace.” Nathaniel Glen Miller Jr. donned the name in 2019 and since released two EPs. His previous EP, “Paper Route,” can be streamed on all platforms.
“YOLO” contains reflective songs, party raisers, and clever bars throughout. It’s also hard to tell if C.h.a.m.p actually needs to breathe, considering how he’s literally spitting rhymes around 90% of the time in these songs. The unstoppable force this up-and-comer displays will secure him a spot at the top before we know it.
Bangers on YOLO by C.h.a.m.p.s
“Baby Debo,” “With the Shits,” and “Beeper Freestyle” are the most energetic songs on “YOLO.” We witness pure rapping skill in “Beeper Freestyle,” meanwhile “Baby Debo” holds the best backing track on the project. “With The Shits” flexes the same level of skill specifically with homage to C.h.a.m.p’s family.
Those may be the most energetic songs, but that doesn’t make the title track “YOLO,” as well as “Nights Like These” and “PTSD” anything lesser. These tracks open up a little bit more and maintain a chill attitude by comparison. What’s really crazy about all of this music is how powerful C.h.a.m.p comes off. There is in fact no doubt that the struggle he prefers to talk about over fame is a real one.
In 2019, C.h.a.m.p was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head. During this experience he came up with that very name, representing his resolve and virtue. These songs in YOLO are about his life and what he holds dear, so one would do best to listen closely. Don’t pass up on this amazing gem of a hip-hop prodigy before he reaches the top.
