There’s no doubt that weed is prominent in hip-hop culture. But it’s not often we see an album completely dedicated to our dear friend Mary Jane. And when I say completely dedicated, I mean, every single song is named after a strain or type of weed. Portland based rappers Bocha and Donte Thomas, and producer Corey G present: BUDS; released July 2nd.
BUDS stands for Be U, Don’t Settle

BUDS isn’t just some goofy album about smoking weed all day, every day. This is legit hip-hop, full of rhymes, word-packed bars, catchy choruses, and contagious beats. But don’t get me wrong, it’s still a little goofy, in a good way. The overall sound is genuinely vibey, with some jazz inspired beats, sprinkles of R&B, carefully placed bass, and steady flows delivered with character.
Every track on BUDS is named after a weed strain or type
Typically I’d highlight only a few of the track titles, but every track on BUDS has a title worthy of sharing. The trio starts it off simple with OG. Followed by ten strains, GORILLA COOKIES, ANIMAL FACE, DAWG WALKER, SUNSET SHERBERT, DO SI DO, GSC, GG #4, JET FUEL GELATO, CHERRY PIE, and WEDDING CAKE. Then they threw in MOON ROCKS, followed by a strain I haven’t heard of before: HANS SOLO BURGER. They wrapped it all up with the cult favorite strain slash brand, RUNTZ.
They also brought in a few buds to throw some dope features on BUDS (pun certainly intended). You’ll find Scooty on DAWG WALKER, Farnell Newton on DO SI DO, Jurdan Bryant on GSC, and O’neal O’neal on WEDDING CAKE.
So what’re you waiting for? Go roll up a joint, invite your homies over, and press play.
