Dev Hynes, better known as Blood Orange is a talented composer, songwriter, and vocalist. I was introduced to his music right when Freetown Sound was released. Although I was a fan of all genres, I was a pretty big hip-hop head then. Because of that, Blood Orange’s sound didn’t exactly fit into what I usually listened to. However, his voice, lyrics, and sound captivated me and I was immediately a fan.
Blood Orange has been quietly working since the release of his last album, but he finally broke the silence a week ago. He announced a fourth album on Instagram with a short clip. The soft music made me emotional and reminiscent of when I last listened to his music. I think that the gentle yet emotionally moving music that Blood Orange makes is much needed amongst all the negativity and chaos in the world.
Blood Orange released two singles titled “Jewelry” and “Charcoal Baby” from Negro Swan along with the videos. Both are so beautifully made with impactful messages incorporated into the music and lyrics.

Hynes explains, “My newest album is an exploration into my own and many types of black depression, an honest look at the corners of black existence, and the ongoing anxieties of queer/people of color. A reach back into childhood and modern traumas, and the things we do to get through it all. The underlying thread through each piece on the album is the idea of HOPE, and the lights we can try to turn on within ourselves with a hopefully positive outcome of helping others out of their darkness.”
I’m rooting for Dev and his message, so I’m very excited for the album to be released next month. Negro Swan is available for preorder now. Watch the videos for the singles below!
