Bandai Namco Reveals Global Gundam-Con 2027 Tour, New Gundam Anime Projects, And Massive Plans For Gundam’s Future

Bandai Namco Reveals Global Gundam Con 2027 Tour, New Gundam Anime Projects, And Massive Plans For Gundam’s Future

For years, one of the biggest frustrations for Gundam fans outside of Japan has been watching the franchise’s biggest moments unfold overseas. The giant events, exclusive reveals, massive Gunpla competitions, life size displays, and anniversary celebrations always felt just out of reach unless you were able to fly across the world to experience them yourself. But that finally looks like it’s changing.

During Bandai Namco’s Spring 2026 Gundam Conference Showcase, the company officially revealed plans that could completely change how Gundam operates globally, leading into the franchise’s 50th anniversary in 2029. The announcements included a worldwide Gundam Con expansion, new anime projects, theatrical releases, updates on the live action Gundam movie, and a full remaster of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. This honestly feels like one of the most important stretches Gundam has had in years.

GundamCon 2027 Is Going Global

The biggest announcement from the showcase centered on GundamCon and Bandai Namco’s plan to turn it into a worldwide touring event. The first stop will take place at Makuhari Messe in Japan from January 9 through January 11, 2027. After that, GundamCon will officially expand internationally, with additional locations expected to be announced later. That alone is massive news for Gundam fans outside Japan.

For decades, Western audiences have supported Gundam through anime streaming, Gunpla building, collectible figures, video games, trading cards, and manga sales. Even during periods where Gundam anime was harder to access in the United States, fans still found ways to keep the franchise alive through imports, conventions, online communities, and model kit culture. Despite that support, most of Gundam’s premier experiences remained locked to Japan. That appears to be finally changing as Bandai fully embraces the size of the audience Gundam has globally over the past decade.

GundamCon Could Be The Biggest Gundam Event Ever Created

Bandai also revealed that GundamCon 2027 will combine multiple major events and competitions into one large scale experience instead of separating them across different conventions. Gunpla competitions, trading card tournaments, gaming events, creator showcases, exhibits, panels, and franchise celebrations are all expected to exist under one roof.

The Gunpla Builders World Cup alone already attracts highly detailed custom builds from around the world every single year. Some of the work that builders submit genuinely looks like something pulled directly from an anime production. Bringing that competition into a larger worldwide convention setup immediately raises the scale of what Bandai appears to be planning. GundamCon feels like Bandai is trying to bring all those audiences together into a unified experience.

Netflix’s Live Action Gundam Movie Finally Gets Another Update

Another major reveal during the showcase involved the upcoming live action Gundam movie currently in production with Netflix. Director Jim Mickle appeared during the presentation and confirmed that production is officially underway. Mickle also mentioned that the film will feature both classic mobile suits and ships from the Gundam universe alongside entirely new designs created specifically for the movie. That part immediately grabbed people’s attention.

New Gundam designs are always one of the most exciting parts of any new project because the franchise consistently evolves visually with every generation. Some become iconic almost immediately. Fans are still understandably nervous about a live action adaptation because adapting something on this scale is incredibly difficult. Gundam is not just giant robots fighting each other. The franchise has always balanced war, politics, trauma, ideology, and human relationships underneath the mecha action. If the movie misses that balance, fans will absolutely be devastated.

At the same time, there is still cautious optimism surrounding the project simply because Gundam’s scale feels perfect for modern visual effects technology if handled correctly. If they can capture even a fraction of the energy seen in some of Gundam’s larger animated battles, the movie could end up surprising people.

A New Gundam Wing Project Is Officially In Development

One of the announcements that immediately exploded across the Gundam community was a brand new animated Gundam Wing project currently in development. Bandai Namco has not officially confirmed what the project is yet, but fans immediately connected it to Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop.

For newer fans unfamiliar with it, Frozen Teardrop is an official sequel novel series written by Katsuyuki Sumisawa, who also served as the head writer for the original Mobile Suit Gundam Wing anime. The story takes place after Endless Waltz and significantly expands the Gundam Wing timeline. What makes this especially interesting is that Bandai Namco’s “Operation 30th” material from 2025 already teased imagery and mobile suit designs heavily connected to Frozen Teardrop. Because of that, many fans believe this new animated project could finally adapt material that Gundam Wing audiences have wanted to see animated for years. That would be huge!

Gundam Wing remains one of the most important series in Gundam history internationally because it served as the introduction point for an entire generation of fans in North America during Toonami’s rise on Cartoon Network. For many people, Gundam Wing was their first series period.

Gundam Seed Freedom Zero And The Original OG Gundam Receive Major Updates

Bandai Namco also confirmed that Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom will continue expanding with Seed Freedom Zero, which will receive its own theatrical release. The project will serve as a bridge between Seed Destiny and Gundam Seed Freedom, exploring events that occurred between the two stories. Given how successful Seed Freedom was at the box office, this decision makes perfect sense.

Bandai Namco also revealed plans for a full remaster of The Original Mobile Suit Gundam television series ahead of the franchise’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2029. That is an enormous undertaking!

While the original series has received multiple home releases over the years, properly remastering animation from 1979 for modern displays is a completely different challenge. The fact that Bandai Namco is willing to invest in preserving the original series at this level speaks volumes about how seriously the company is approaching the anniversary. The company also officially recognized April 7 as the official “Gundam Day” through the Japan Anniversary Association. The date marks the original broadcast of Mobile Suit Gundam’s first episode back in 1979.

Bandai Namco Is Building Toward Something Much Bigger

What stands out most from all of these announcements is the scale of Bandai’s long term approach. Instead of treating Gundam’s 50th anniversary as a single event in 2029, the company is building momentum years in advance through anime projects, theatrical releases, remasters, global conventions, and multimedia expansions. Everything feels connected.

The worldwide expansion of GundamCon alone could completely reshape how international fans experience the franchise moving forward. If Bandai follows through on its plans for multiple global locations, this may become one of the most important moments Gundam fans outside Japan have ever had. And honestly, after decades of supporting the franchise from overseas, it feels deserved.

For fans who grew up building Gunpla late at night, recording Toonami episodes onto VHS tapes, arguing over favorite Gundam series online, and watching Japan get all the coolest events from afar, this finally feels like Gundam opening its doors to the rest of the world in a much bigger way.
