If you’ve never heard of the Akshara Music Ensemble, they’re a New York City based group of Indian classical musicians, who seek to build from the foundations of Indian classical and discover new innovative sounds. Akshara often plays between these sounds and modern composition, jazz improvisation, and other world music, never failing to show dynamic creativity in their creations.
This unique and talented group was formed in 2008, assembling some of New York’s greatest Indian classical talents. This composer led ensemble utilizes instruments such as the violin, bansuri, tabla, cello, morsing, and konakkol, alongside classical Indian styled chorus and chanting.
Their debut album, “In Time,” had been in the making for five years, and was finally released in 2017. This featured track, “Mohana Blues,” won the ‘Best World Traditional Song‘ award at the 13th Annual Independent Music Awards. The Republic of Jazz recently had this to say about the ensemble: “Akshara Creates Space For Evocative Melodic Exploration Among Mathematically Elegant South Indian Rhythms.”
