The light at the end of the tunnel may not be as near as we once thought. With restrictions lifting, new variants, and vaccination rates not as high as we need them to be, COVID-19 cases are spiking once again. Loosened restrictions must now be tightened up to prevent the pandemic from getting worse. Left and right, shows and venues are announcing new COVID-19 safety policies, including vaccination or negative test requirements. The latest to make an announcement is AEG Presents, the world’s second largest live music company.
AEG Presents will be requiring proof of vaccination at all 48 of their clubs and theaters, going in effect October 1st. This includes New York City’s Webster Hall, Brooklyn Steel, Atlanta’s Terminal West, Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre, and more. This policy will also extend to all festivals ran by AEG, which includes Coachella, Day N Vegas, Firefly, and more.
Official vaccination policy announcement from AEG Presents
The reason the policy won’t be going into effect until October 1st, is to give people enough time to get fully vaccinated. Leading up to this date, all shows will be requiring either proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test taken within 72 hours of the event. Despite the strict vaccination guidelines, the announcement did not go over the masking policy. It is unclear whether this policy will change, but as of now AEG strongly encourages the use of masks where it is not required by law.
Just a few weeks ago, we were optimistic about where our business, and country, were heading. The Delta variant, combined with vaccine hesitancy, is pushing us in the wrong direction again.
Jay Marciano, CEO of AEG Presents
By contrast, AEG’s biggest competitor, Live Nation has decided to take a slightly different approach. Instead of requiring vaccinations or proof of negative tests for all shows, they have left it up to the artists to decide the policy. Artists are able to make the decision of whether or not they want to require proof of vaccination or negative tests for attendees. Regardless, Live Nation will be requiring all of its employees to be vaccinated to enter events, venues, and offices by October 4th (with limited exceptions as required by law).
